The Idea

Ancient Objects for Modern Dilemmas is a creative collaboration led by Verena Hewat and artist Vic Macrae. It is inspired by The British Museum's Middle East collections and set up to raise funds for young refugees in the U.K.

Artefacts can enlighten us about our own life and how we reflect on it, and can often hold a poetic meaning far beyond the intention of the people who made them. They have the capacity to put individuals in direct contact with their creators, connect strangers, and remind us all of our shared heritage.

Neither of us are experts. We connect with objects on an aesthetic and emotional level. We are especially interested in finding connections that may not be immediately obvious in a purely historical context.

We are grateful to The British Institute of the Study of Iraq for their grant funding.
